Garden in progress

New Bird Feeding Station

Rock Pond

This rock will have a pond in front of it to recirculate the water. I have already seen Scrub and Steller's Jay, Am. Crow, Am. Robin, N. Flicker and Black-capped Chickadee. I will plant a variety of native trees and shrubs around it.

Lewis's Woodpecker...nesting in artificial cavities

Prior to this project by the East Cascades Bird Conservancy Lewis's Woodpeckers were not known to nest in artificial cavities. These boxes were placed in an area where the woodpeckers were losing there prefered snags. This forest had burned in 1990 so in recent years the snags were becoming weak and falling. Lewis's Woodpecker are weak excavators and prefer already existing cavities. The success of this program has caught the attention of numerous agencies and will now be implemented in programs in other states and provinces. Lewis Woodpecker numbers have been declining and they are on watchlists

California Sister

This is the first California Sister (Adelpha bredowii) I have seen at our house. I had enough time to get the camera before it flew off. The larval host plants is oak...so with all the oak around here I wonder why there aren't more. Before all the development around here I used to see the similar Lorquin's Admiral (Limenitis lorquini) around the house. Host plant for the Lorquin's Admiral include Cottonwood, Willow and Aspen.

Oregon Yellow Rail and Black Swift

Southern Oregon Trip
On June 7 and 8 Steve and Sybil Kohl and myself went on a trip to find Black Swift and Yellow Rail in Oregon. These are very local species in Oregon and are usually relatively easy to find at the traditional locations. In the case of the rail it is usually heard but rarely seen.
On June 7 at approximately 7:30 pm we saw the Yellow Rail in Fort Klamath at the Kimball historical marker. A single bird flew up and was relocated in the short grass. Great looks were enjoyed as we watched the bird through the scope for about 4 minutes.
On June 8 we went to Salt Creek Falls near Crescent Lake Oregon. We arrived at about 8:00 am. After waiting for about 20 minutes we saw 4 birds flying around the area.
